LOL!! I can just imagine how long my poor surf-coast barista and her corporate refugee lover would last in the asteroid mining colony…

I like your idea, J-A!! Another month to finish drafting, then a month or two on revisions…. *looks for comp ending in March*

And I can plot the space opera at the same time – brilliant!!! Right now I’m pouring another coffee and catching up on the inbox.

i support taking a break …

… and then finishing it and putting it into one of those romance competitions! it took you only a month to do 50k, it’ll take you a month to finish and then you can go back to your space opera an even better writer cos you’ll have another m/s under your belt!

And, of course, you have to finish it. You can’t do all that work and just toss it aside! Or, how about you find a way to work those 50K words into your space opera as a sub-plot? Then you kill two birds.

sounds great, janette! i like handwriting too – it’s more flexible and you can take it with you wherever you go to snatch a few minutes to write another sentence or two. i found that when you develop the ‘write without editing’ thing, you also ‘go into the zone’ much faster and it doesn’t take long for creativity to hit the ground running.

good approach with updating as you go along – it’s a nightmare to do it at the end. the other things is that i would recommend dictating as you go along, particularly if you have a deadline. i do it in the evenings after work when i’m feeling tired. this is also important with voice op software, as there end up being more errors than you think as you go along (or so i’ve found).

Thanks Merrilee – still a huge experimental work in progress right now of course, but I set out to have fun with it so at least I’m getting that bit right!

Characters WILL keep on doing things I didn’t see coming. Have been going back to Scrivenor and updating scene outlines on almost daily basis. Theory is that this will prevent me going mad when I have my enormous handwritten ms and no idea what bit goes where….

Good point about the read-aloud advantage, it’s true that can make a BIG difference. I did try dictating the day 1 output on day 2 but fell heavily into editing, and of course it was WAY too early!! Characters hadn’t even begun to really speak their minds, so it was less like a butterfly emerging and more like caterpillar goop dripping out of the cocoon. Ack. Still swimming in the murky metaphor waters – what is WITH that?
